MacroAmes1 98/100 is a ready-to-use traditional Ames mutagenicity test kit in Petri dish format — without minimal glucose plates (glucose plates sold separately as AS02-390-MG). 2-sample complete kit with S. typhimurium TA98 and TA100.

In the Ames test, Salmonella strains with his⁻ auxotrophy cannot grow without histidine. Only strains that undergo a back-mutation (reversion) to his⁺ prototrophy form colonies on minimal medium. A mutagen causes an increase in revertant colony frequency proportional to its potency. Revertants are referred to as "revertants" — their count versus spontaneous background determines mutagenic index.
